March 31, 2004 -- The ACME Gallery (Los Angeles) and Peter Loughrey are are pleased to announce a special exhibition on of the Italian architect/designer Gio Ponti (1891–1979). This show is co-curated by Peter Loughrey and Chip Tom at the Acme Gallery.
The exhibition is comprised of selected pieces by Ponti created during his apex (mid to late 1950's). Complementing the furniture will be examples of both modern and contemporary figurative paintings, drawings, and collages. This configuration underscores Gio Ponti's abilities as a figurative painter as well as a world class architect.
Ponti began his long, remarkable career as a painter in the early 1900's and later developed into one of the best known architects and designers of the last century. Ponti frequently included his own paintings in the domestic settings he created. His reputation for his furniture continues to grow in stature due to the excellent and innovative design and fine craftsmanship. The exhibit will present strong examples of his tables, chairs, cabinets and beds with headboards that include shelves.
Installed within the domestically-scaled settings will be specifically selected paintings, drawings, and collages by artists from Picasso, Max Beckmann, and Joseph Cornell to contemporary artists such as Micaela Amato, Billy Sullivan, Patty Wickman, Kurt Kauper, Tim Gardner and others.
Show is open Tues - Saturday (March 30th - May 1st) at the ACME Gallery (5160 Wilshire Blvd, Los Angeles).

September 7, 2004 -- From an environmental perspective, land-fill taxes and the issues surrounding community waste disposal are set to become widely debated with new and strict EU laws on land-fill availability set to be introduced over the next five years. Oxfam has in excess of 700 stores and recycling centres across the UK and liaises closely with local authorities regarding disposal of large, unwanted household items such as furniture.
As Michael Taylor, Oxfam Trading’s Corporate Account Manager said, “Books and clothes comprise by far our biggest single disposal costs. Technically, furniture is disposed of by container and we pay the same container costs no matter what we put in it, though bulkier items might cost more to dispose of if we have to make special arrangements to take them to a specific amenities site. Looking ahead, it is the disposal of brown/white electrical items plus larger objects such as furniture that will probably give us most cause for concern.”
From customer research, Europe by Net recognised that its customers want their old furniture to go to a good home - and responded by launching this novel idea.
Europe by Net has from its inception maintained a strong policy of supporting local communities and charities wherever possible. In the UK it uses charity 1st Moveability to deliver its furniture – this is a charity assisting people with mental health issues. People interested in taking part in the recycling service are requested to inform Europe by Net at the time of placing their order. This service is free except for petrol/diesel delivery charges.
The "New for Old" service is currently available in the UK and US. Europe by Net offers over 5,000 products that fall within the criteria of this scheme. The company has a world-wide presence with over 50% of its business base in the US and Japan. The remainder is spread across Europe (including the UK). The company was set up with the intention of enabling consumers to save money – this has been achieved at an averate rate of 35% - the normal profit margin associated with displaying goods in high-street stores. On-line shopping continues to be a highly ranked growth area.

Walpole, MA -- January 26, 2003 – Before you spend your hard-earned dollars on inferior furniture, find out the real facts of what goes into quality wood furniture. Ed McDonough, owner of Boston Accent Furniture, reveals all the secrets in his new book, “7 Steps to Buying Wood Furniture You’ll Love.”
Between the covers, McDonough states “The educated consumer is the person that always gets the greatest value for their dollar!” The book’s seven-step process educates the reader on the different types of furniture, the materials used to make it, the manufacturing techniques and how to spot the good from the bad. The goal is to instruct the reader how to determine the quality of furniture they want to purchase, by teaching them how it’s made, and then how to get it at a fair price.
The book also details the difference between standard production furniture and high quality handcrafted custom furniture. It exposes how quality goes down in production furniture as the speed to produce it increases. It arms the reader up front with all the knowledge they need to make the right decision.
As a bonus, McDonough has developed a simple process to guide the reader through determining what style of furniture will best fit their home and lifestyle. Here both functionality and décor come into play. The lesson concludes with a simple exercise that determines the “Buyer’s Index”, directing the reader to the appropriate furniture market to shop.
To close out the reading, Step 7 – Understand How Furniture Stores Sell, enlightens the reader on the techniques retailers use to “sell you” and why. It discusses how furniture prices are determined and how major furniture manufacturers impose a Minimum Advertised Price directly to the retailer, which causes the consumer’s price to go up!
Included in the back of the book is the Furniture Buyer’s Checklist to keep the reader on track when making their purchasing decision. This, along with over 25 secrets shared by the author, will lead to many successful purchases of quality wooden furniture.
